How do I get a skilled work visa for Canada?

This is a very common question I receive, and the answer is pretty straightforward: if you are an international student, you must have a “Canadian work experience” before you can apply for a skilled work visa. This work experience would include all jobs you’ve held in Canada within the past three years. This requirement may be waived if you have a family member who is working in Canada, or if you are under the age of 18 and have been employed in Canada for more than three years.

The Canadian government is trying to reform our immigration system, and it's a pretty big deal. The changes are aimed at making it easier for professionals like us to get into Canada from time to time. It’s amazing what a large chunk of change can do to your head.

- Requirements to get a skilled work visa in Canada

The newly-minted skilled worker program (SWC) is the government's effort to expand opportunities for Canadians who want to work in Canada but don't qualify for a temporary resident visa. There are two main requirements: Attending an accredited training course and passing a test or exams proving you have the skills to do the job. Both these requirements can be satisfied by either completing a vocational training program at an approved institution or taking a test at the Canadian Citizenship and Immigration (CCI) office in your area. Many people have found that attending an accredited Canadian training program meets both of these requirements.

Being a skilled worker is one of the most important factors that a Canadian can use to measure up to the high standards of the Canadian labor market. For many candidates, the main qualification required for a skilled work visa is English proficiency. Everyone should have basic levels of English proficiency, and it is something that can be remedied through regular practice.
